Well, I disagree with that. Plenty of characters from various media have many disparate powers that you need more than simple multiclassing to replicate. Also, while as in D&D spellcasting = power, a lot of characters I enjoy have no casting at all or only a bit to buff and supplement their martial prowess, and in-universe are the most powerful and unstoppable beings the world has ever known. [sblock]Say I wanted to make Luca Blight from Suikoden 2. He could do some fire attacks through his sword and probably had near-Wolverine level self healing, but other than that...he was just a big scary dude with a sword. And he massacres armies by the thousands (he has his own army, but it's pretty clear he could handle it himself ;) ). Your army FINALLY defeats him only after: 1. His own generals, sick of his crazy, genocidal tendencies betray him by informing you of the night raid he's planning to attack your castle with to finish you off 2. You pump him and his guard troops full of arrows 3. Three separate elite strike teams, each made up of 6 of your most powerful characters (you have 108 by the game' end plus thousands of nameless grunts in your army, it's an awesome game like that) ambush him as he tries to escape until they can't hold him off any more 4. He's pumped full of another ~2 dozen flaming arrows 5. The main character finishes him off in the hardest duel of the game And he still gets to make a badass death speech before collapsing, followed immediately by your main character passing out from exhaustion from the duel. All in a game WITH spellcasters, you couldl literally load up those strike teams with them if you wanted to.[/sblock] I could never, EVER make a character like that using the D&D rules. There's a very thick granite ceiling capping the amount of awesome and unstoppable a melee character can get that's simply not present in other forms of media.
