Traveller was my first RPG. A friend of mine showed me the Journal of the Travellers' Aide Society and explained it went with a game that played like you were characters in a sci fi story. After that I begged my parents to get it for me. Christmas Day, 1979, I got the original boxed set and Book 4 - Mercenary. It is still my favorite game to play, and I will play it whenever someone says they want to run it.

Ah, yes, Traveller. I once spent literally hours rolling up a fantastic character (great rolls), only to have him die on his last tour (I think I was required to do one more tour). Diiiissssaaaapppoinnnnttteddd.

Ah, then you must have been using the first edition, first printing rules. In every book after that there was the option that a failed Survival roll means you were injured and are forced to Muster Out at that point. I don't think I ever took hours to make a character in Traveller, but then I found the rules and I just clicked.
