Troll Lord sale - worht the money?

First Post
Troll Lord is having a sale on its old modules and the Erde setting amterial. The price is very low, but those products that were reviewed here are marginal at best and a number of products were never reviewed. Anyone found use for products like Heart of Glass and Winter Runes? For $20.00 I'm tempted, but I'd hate to have buyer's regret even at that price when there are likely to be other Xmas sales by other vendors.

I couldnt tell you, I havent looked at them myself.

But if it helps you decide any, everytime I go to my FLGS, they have Troll Lord bundles I think for the same price. They are still there every time I go in. They can't sell them, even cheap like that.

Heart of Glass & Winter Runes

I edited and wrote for Troll Lord for a while, but I'll tell it like it is:

Heart of Glass: I edited this adventure. Most of my edits even made the final cut. I liked it when I read the original text and liked it more when I saw it in print. It's an all city based adventure. Mostly mystery with some skull crushing in for good measure. NO dungeons. It's very modular, set in any medium city, and with a large array of detailed NPC's all entwined in the plot. It's detailed enough to actually give you enough of the city to work with if the PCs stray off the beaten path. I say this one is good at cover price, so at a discount it's a steal.

Winter Runes: This is a much more Erde-specific adventure. It also hinges on the DM introducing a new d20 mechanic envolving said runes into the campaign. Half the book is a sourcebook of these new rules, the rest is an adventure set in cold overlands using the new rules. It's allright, but it's not very modular.

Hey all,

As the publisher of all these titles and the author of many I would like to comment.

These modules are solid game accessories. All of them. They lack only in presentation and some of them in editing. And most of this you can lay squarly on my shoulders as I was head of the company then and made many calls. We were still learning how to do much of the things that come naturally now.

Concerning retailers with them: All of these books came out in the hey day of d20, most of them went into second and third printings and they saw WIDE circulation. I certainly can't comment on why these books are still on shelves. I do know that many retailers ordered very deep in those days. Beyond that there could be a number of reasons...presentation not the least. ;)

You can download one of them, The Lion in the Ropes here: http://www.castlesandcrusades.com/candc.htm Its free. the Castles and Crusades version.

I would strongly recommend them. They are good books.

Jeff, I'm going to drop you an email soon!

Steve

A lot of the early Troll Lord modules (which seem to be what the $20 bundle offers) tend to be rather short and a bit lacking in production values. Some of them do have some good ideas, though.
