Trying to find a rule...

I could have sworn I read this somewhere...

1) When you are on "Difficult Terrain", your movement is halfed (basically for every one square you want to move, you have to count it as two).
2) Being in darkness is considered "difficult terrain". Is this true? Does it matter if it is total darkness or partial darkness (like from the darkness spell, which creates "shadowly illumination")?
3) I thought I read somewhere that when you are on "difficult terrain", you can't take a 5-foot step. You have to use move actions to move, and the movement counts as two squares (see #1 above). Is this true? If so, where is the rule found, I can't seem to find it in the PHB.

See 5-foot step in the PHB Glossary.

Hmmm. It says you can't take a 5-foot step into an area of difficult terrain. What if you are in difficult terrain already but there is an area of non-difficult terrain a mere 5 feet away (say you are just inside the edge of darkness), can you take a 5-foot step out of the difficult terrain?

Oh yeah, and thanks for finding that. Was driving me crazy looking for it...

Also, what if the person is entangled? They move at half speed, so can they still make 5 foot steps or is it only in difficult terrain?

Darkness isn't difficult terrain; they're two separate rules.

If you're in darkness, you can't take a 5' step. So entering darkness you can do with a 5' step; leaving darkness, you can't.

A square of difficult terrain - undergrowth, say - requires double movement cost to move into. If you're moving into undergrowth, it costs ten feet of movement. If you're moving out of undergrowth, it costs 5 feet of movement. So, if you want to enter undergrowth, you can't do it with a 5 foot step. If you want to leave undergrowth, you can.

It's "if your movement is hampered - such as into a square of difficult terrain, in darkness, or while blinded". All of those result in movement at half speed; I'd be inclined to rule that anything forcing movement at half speed (like the entangled condition) would count as hampered movement.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Knight's third level ability, Bulwark of Defense, which states that any square he threatens is considered difficult terrain. I assumed this ability was used to make it harder for people to get away from the Knight... What other practicle use would this ability have for the Knight?

A couple of others are that it makes it harder for opponents to get past the knight in order to get at his allies, and it prevents them from taking 5 ft steps and making full attacks on him.

Give him a spiked chain, and ask that question again :)

Better, give an Ogre knight levels.

Spiked chain is nice (being able to threaten adjacent squares) but not required. Any reach weapon in the hands of the knight would work. Hmm, I think I have my next character.
