Okay. There have been threads on how to defend Kobold warrens. But how would Kobold pirates attack other ships and what defenses would their pirate ships have?

Kobold submarines. They are sneaky, they are weird, they love NOT to fight in the open. Submarines. Giant turtle shells.

Remember that pirates really aren't big into gun battles or sinking ships. They WANT those ships, the ship is at least as valuable as the cargo most of the time. So they should be built around running down ships, boarding them, and taking them without undue damage.

So their offensive strategy is to cruise near shipping lanes looking innocuous. When they spot a mark they don't hoist the jolly roger and give chase, they act like a fellow merchant until close enough to let fly with t'gallants, staysails, etc. They close in a burst like an ambushing lion or leopard. This action will tip off the target who will almost certainly try to run. Major onboard weapons are going to be used more for warning shots or attacks on the rigging than the classic double pace broadside.

If they have say a ballista or light catapult they should be firing munitions that do more crew damage than anything else. Pots with swarms of biting insects. Lit noxious smokesticks, poisoned caltrops, etc. They want to disable and hinder the crew while damaging the ship as little as possible during the close to board phase. Once they board standard Kobold swarm tactics are fine. Using light armor and short-spears with large or tower shields.

Defensively a pirate operates on speed and evasion. They do not want a stand-up fight, especially not against a proper warship. Pirate vessels will be smallish and over-rigged with large crews for boarding. If engaged by an enemy warship they will attempt to minimize losses. Fleeing if that is feasible, and using their greater speed to leave warships behind, or use their smaller size and draft to cut through waters inaccessible to the pursuing warship.

If caught in the act with a prize in company they will fight but more as a distraction than anything else. They will attempt to draw off the warship from their prize long enough to ensure it escapes before taking to their heels. But rather than stand up they will take to their heels as a first option, they want loot not a glorious combat. On the other hand if run down and forced to fight they will be tenacious.

As pirates no quarter will be shown them and no mercy offered, their only hope is victory or death. They will jump straight into offense in an attempt to wrong-foot the enemy and overwhelm them in a shock action. At the very least they'll want to cause casualties and damage enough to prevent the warship from continuing its pursuit. Expect them to target rigging extensively and officers as a priority. If drawn into offensive action with a proper warship that they might have a hope of defeating they will attempt to carry the ship and take it themselves. A real warship is a big step up, they'll take it if they can. If not expect them to do as much damage to vital elements as quickly as possible and use that to effect an escape.
