It is a question of individuality. Say there is an otherworld called "Plane of Humanity", separate from our world, the Material Plane. In the Material Plane, there is a Human named Shakhar Zohavi of Winterhaven. If there is nothing of Zohavi in the Plane of Humanity, then that other world has nothing to do with our world. It is simply not part of us. The same is true for individual elementals. It doesnt matter of the Elemental Plane of Earth has "rocks". It needs to have our rock! Say our Material world has a specific mountain, with as specific cliff on one of its slopes, and on that cliff is an amazing rocky feature jutting out slightly that looks like the shape of a human body, that villagers have named The Dancer. If there is nothing of our mountain, our cliff, our Dancer, in the Elemental Plane, then that plane is simply not part of us, and is not part of our natural world. Who cares if the plane has "rocks". It is our rock that must be there, or else that plane has nothing to do with us. A "nature spirit" isnt a disembodied spirit. Just like a "human spirit" is the mind of a unique and specific human, a nature spirit is the mind of a unique and specific feature of nature. This feature is a physical object. If it is a rock, you know where it is, what it looks like, and you can touch it. If it is the mind of a tree, it is the tree growing in your backyard, not some other tree somewhere else. If it is a river spirit, you can get in your boat and row across it. Animism is our natural world, only, and nowhere else. Each grouping of natural features in our world, including humans, is a community of minds who are interacting with each other. Sometimes we dont know our neighbors so well, and sometimes one of our neighbors is an intimate friend.
