I take it you're one of the Bothered About Defeatable Dragons group. They usually go too far (BADD Dragon's are custom built specifically to beat the PCs, have a collection of traps that make Grimtooth look like a wuss, plus lots of situational advantages, plus lots of custom magic items). The dragon was by no means a pushover. Hong missed completely in the first round due to the dragon having AC 55. Unfortunately a Greater Dispelling knocked the AC down to 38 in the first round (Black dragons aren't that great at spellcasting, so the spellcasters didn't have that much trouble dispelling stuff). The PCs used up nearly all of their combat spells, several PCs got chewed on and spat out, most of the battle was in darkness spells so only about half the PCs could see (the darkness kept getting dispelled but the dragon would use quicken spell-like to put it back up again). Back to the original topic: Hong's archer character is quite effective. Not having to close to melee makes a big difference to the survivability of archers (the melee fighters took a bucketload of damage in the battle with the dragon). The 'holy' enchantment on the bow, where the melee fighters don't have damage-boosting enchantments also helps a lot. Some of Hong's feats and PrC abilities seem OK individually, but become very nasty in combination. Geoff.
