Character sheets are something I’ll never really understand. For me, the simpler the character sheet, the happier I am. In that vein, I usually go with a blank piece of lined paper and a simple pen with a pencil for statistics that are going to change per level.
For others though, the search for the, dare I say it, Ultimate Character Record Sheet, can never be complete. With that in mind, Mongoose has created a 3.5 version character sheet that runs for $4.95 and is 24 pages long. Well, it’s actually a little longer as there are charts on the internal covers.
All of the basic stuff is here. What are my stats? What are my saving throws? What is my armor class? It’s all here. Psionic abilities? Yup, but in my version, these are the old sheets as they have the old psionic combat information. Side information like physical description and room for illustration? Covered.
So what makes this an ultimate character sheet? Some of the bonus stuff for starting role players or GMs in a hurry for one. The front interior cover has basic personality, values, worldview, childhood events, financial background and other tables to help round out a quick character. It’s not quite in the detail level of the old Heroes of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, but it’ll suffice for those in need of a touch of information. Another nice little touch is the character’s list wishes, a last will and testament. A handy little thing when one wishes to discuss the passing out of the old items and loot of a slain character.
Lastly, character quirks, broken up into different fields, help make this more than a character sheet. We’ve got things like physiological quirks like hard of hearing to social quirks like infamous where you’re associated with ‘a bad story’. Almost on the side, if you want to remove the staples and put the sheets in a three-ring binder, you’re set. Not quite on the side, has been Mongoose’s support of the product. They’ve got numerous expansions for their various OGL lines to help round out the character sheets. This is something vital do to as there are numerous free character sheets already on the internet and keeping your product competitive with speciality forms to support a wide variety of games, helps ensure the utility of it and lengthy its lifespan.
When all is said and done, this one suffers from some of the same problems that others do. In being everything, it sometimes has to cram. For example, the spells, both arcane and divine, not to mention psionic powers. In trying to cover all of the bases, it has things for information like strongholds. Useful? To a point but how many first level characters are really going to need something like that.
