for me... Ultimate Spiderman is the best in my humble opinion. the Ultimates is a close second (if not first). the New Ultimate Fantastic Four has just begun but it's looking good. then the other titles like Ultimate War and Ultimate Team-up. Ultimate X-men has been my least favorite, but it's still "ultimately" more readable than the current original books IMHO. as I've said though - the Ultimate characters have the same iconic style/themes of the originals but otherwise they're "reimagined" to be a little more modern fun. I'm okay with everyone taking their shot at that type character as long as they have a good take on the originals. Reading the Ultimate comics is fun but not super necessary for our "what if". the Secret Wars WAS the set-up for a battle royal... but the coolest bits are the interactions of the characters, the moral stances taken and the outcomes of changes to some characters. the biggest example is Spiderman's black suit that would eventually become Venom originally came from the Secret Wars 12 issue mini-series. I know that PBeM battles are slower, so I expect ALOT of that fun roleplaying to be had then quick exciting battles... there were LOTS of motivations running about for all the characters. The series cemented Captain America's leadership and respect from ALL the Marvel heroes, it showed the mutant distrust of the X-men extremely well... The villains weren't always on the same tactical side. and Galactus was feared by all. There was also the planet itself that offered different peoples and areas of planets, since the Beyonder actually took pieces of planets from across the Universe to form BattlePlanet. there was even a small chunk of Denver. I would plan to use all this and even add things not in the series for the update. hope that helps -kev-
