Unarmed combat feats in D&D--not monks!

First Post
VTurlough had a "D20 Rant" thread up here a little while back in which he pointed out some of the things that troubled him about D20 as a system. One of the things he mentioned was class and asked the question "why can only monks be good at unarmed combat?" This got me to thinking...

Has anyone tried mixing and matching feats from different games and using them in D&D? Specifically, Spycraft has an Unarmed Combat Feat System which would not mimic the special abilities of a monk, but a fighter could easily become a tough combatant in unarmed combat.

I do doubt, however, that he would be a match for anything but a low-level monk and the two systems may not mix well, but it is a thought. Any comments?

In my campaign I have a wide range of martial arts feats, many new and some which parallel some of the monks class abilities.

This is because in my particular setting martial arts are very common - and it is quite possible that you will come across a fighter who is very specialised in unarmed combat but doesn't have the monks mystic benefits.

You can find these at http://www.starguild.freeserve.co.uk/frp/kyri_feats.htm about 3/4 the way down the page.

The revised Star Wars d20 rules also has an interesting take on martial arts feats, with a rather nice little martial arts chain.

Cheers

I agree, especially when in comes to grappling.

When making Ubaar (see sig), a Cleric of Kord, it seemed to me strange that he would need either a ton of feats or be a monk, and he still wouldn't be very good at all at Wrestling (Kord is the god of Strength and Wrestling).

So I modified the Mighty Contender of Kord PrC to incorporate skill in Wrestling, putting in modified OA grappling feats.

Hey, Plane Sailing! These feats look great. It would still take a brave fighter to forego his various other feats in order to be as great a martial artist as a monk, but I like what you have done.

Here's a thought... If you have the time and interest, put together a proposal for martial arts rules and send it to Morrus. Might be the kind of thing they are looking to publish.

Thanks for all the positive feedback, guys - I might have a go at that once I've got the WotC World submission and various real-life stuff out of the way.

*glows with pride*
- checks for fall -
