Under The Eclipse: the d20 Modern Sourcebook

First Post
I’ve got an exciting announcement for everyone here on the forum.

Some of you may know me, a bunch probably don’t. I’m a freelance artist and writer who’s been writing articles for Steve Jackson Games' d20 Weekly while I work at an animation studio for my day job.

I’ve been posting a campaign story called Under The Eclipse for some time now and have been extremely pleased with the responses I’ve been getting. After talking things over with my collaborator (the best damn player I know), we’ve decided to compile a bunch of our ideas into a d20 Modern pdf sourcebook that we'll be selling through RPG Now.

We’re busting our butts to make this a professional looking pdf with some unique and interesting d20 Modern material.

A good chunk of the material will be based around the campaign, but there’s a ton of other things that we’ve brainstormed up just for the book. Here’s the current material, though it could be subject to change as we flesh it all out:

- 3-5 new Advanced classes, utilizing unique magical powers or ways to combat the supernatural.

- 30+ new FX Items, drawing from all sorts of bizarre fusions of modern sensibilities with mystical properties.

- 5-10 new creatures to surprise your group with.

- NPC statistics for key characters from the Under The Eclipse campaign.

- Essays on running d20 Modern games, incorporating unique magic into your campaign and breaking the rules with style and grace.

To get things started, here’s some sample pages from the book, ready and formatted. Some of you may have seen early drafts of these two, but they've been updated and expanded. We want our material to have lots of details and crisp illustrations so that people can utilize them well in their campaigns:

FX Item: The Snapdragon Boxes (98 kb pdf file)
FX Item: Eldritch Ice Cubes (92 kb pdf file)

All told, with some of the session summaries thrown in for good measure, it should clock in at around 100 pages. If things go well (so far so good) we may have the book out as early as late April.

Get excited, new d20 Modern material is on the way!

Before I forget... even though this book is primarily a compilation of our ideas and concepts, that doesn’t mean that it’s completely closed off to submissions. However, we’re not actively hunting for material, so you’ll have to bring it to our attention if you’re interested in having it be a part of the release.

In the end, I’m the editor on it, so it’ll have to pass my personal filter. If you think you have something original and really special, pass it along to me and we’ll chat. No guarantees though.

Possible writing submissions:
- FX item ideas (see the format in the sample pdfs linked above.)
- advanced classes (fully written up, not just concepts.)
- essays on running d20 Modern (well thought out and well written.)

Possible art submissions:
My friends at the studio and I are doing almost all of the art, but if you’ve got a great modern-oriented piece and don’t mind signing over permission for us to put it into the book, we should talk.

I’m not sure what I can offer financially for any accepted material. I have no idea how successful the final product will be, so it’s hard for me to set a pay rate or anything like that at this stage.

I know that seems unprofessional, but as I’ve said, we’re not doing this for submissions, just keeping our options open for something kick ass that may arrive out of the blue. Each submission will have to be judged on its own merit. I am willing to pay for top notch material, but I'm not rich or anything.

All accepted material will be clearly credited, we’re not here to steal anyone’s hard work.

Okay, this is cool.

Too bad I don't play D20 Modern or often buy .pdfs (kinda hard with a cash only finance system). :(

Some preview artwork from the NPC section I'm currently working on.

Here's the portraits of Conroy and Karen from Under The Eclipse :

...and here's one of the creatures from the book, a humanoid construct called the Flesh-Driven:

More to come!

Glad you did the movement to publish it, the setting deserves it.

I'm co-founder of a small beginning d20 company, Horade Publications, so if you want any idea or advise about pdf publishing, I can try to help, I've researched a lot about it these last months. My email is in my profile :)
