Built atop the tallest mountain long ago, NAME is a true fortress. At it's heart lies a forgotten temple, long since converted into a palace. The temple is the nexus of a massive anti-magic field covering the mountain.
A complex series of tunnels and caves lead into the depths of the mountain, where water is pumped to the city above.
There is only one entrance to the city, following a long and winding road, leading to the city's merchant district being located near the gates. Recently, however, several cargo lifts were added to the northern wall, and a market has begun to develop there too. While there are strict goods checks at the main entrance, the cargo lifts are privately owned and it's the responsibility of the owners to ensure no contraband enters the city.

I think I clicked the wrong forum link. I seem to have ended up on page 46 of a Choose-you-own-adventure book.

D&D Lifts always give me an giddy feel of Where Eagles Dare cable-car shenanigans. Cool platforms for skills/combat. Your fortress/citadel also has the feel of Santorini to me. A long and arduous winding road uphill or lifts.
