Disadvantage on attacks against anyone other than you is great control and it has unlimited uses. Warding maneuver might be almost as good as the shield spell. +1d8 AC for you or someone near you and if the attack still hits they get resistance to the damage is nothing to sneeze at. Not having to take sentinel since you get most of it as part of your subclass also frees up a feat/asi for anything else. It may not be as good as a defender in 4e but we're not playing 4e. Very little in 5e can match their combo tanking and control.ETA: All that said I just don't think Cavalier belongs in the same conversation as PDK, Champion, or Arcane Archer and it's not what this thread is about.
