I figured I'd post an update of sorts here myself... My wife played D&D for the first time last night. She wanted a human/big dog hybrid, sort of a half-woman/half-saint bernard, who was a powerful warrior, but not a "weapon master" type; and so, with a little judicious tweaking of the half-orc template, a Level 1 Half-Dog Ranger was born. Her stats rolled on 4d6 drop lowest were: 18 - assigned to strength 16 - assigned to dex 10 - assigned to cha 14 - assigned to wis 15 - assigned to con 12 - assigned to int I watched this amazing set of stats materialize right before my eyes! Why the heck is it that the FIRST TIMERS get stuff like this??? :) so, armed with two "huge paul hogan-style knives" (short swords) and a sling, she set off in search of two orcs who burned down a small village. She got a simple tutorial in using skills, and spotted the two orcs hiding in the forest. She took each of them down in three rounds, total. later, she was rescuing a unicorn from several orcs and one really nasty orcish butcher, who wanted the unicorn for unsavory purposes, hidden in an abandoned mine. She took her first dungeon crawl quite well. I introduced all the basics (saving throws against traps, breaking down doors, listening for distant noises, etc.) All in all, she enjoyed it thoroughly. She got to do a little role-play, and plenty of descriptive combat, which she enjoyed immensely. She wants to play again soon - I will probably see if her sister and sister's boyfriend want to play too, to give her a little bit of party dynamic. One sidenote: In two thirty-minute scenarios, I saw FIVE verified critical hits by her with short swords. FIVE! Note to self: steal wife's dice on periodic basis...
