[QUOTE="humble minion, post: 9216956, member: 5948"] If they care. The last time i was laid off, it was because the medium,-sized Australian company i worked for had been bought out by a much larger American competitor, who was sick of our specialised Australian product outselling their generically international product in Australia, and decided to just buy out the competition. On purchase, it was all 'we're so excited to synergise our advantage of scale and resourcing with your specialised market knowledge!' Two weeks after that, they laid off 40% of the company. The idea was clearly to kill our product and replace it with theirs, but in Aust you need to give a significant payout when you lay off staff, that voluntary resignations are not entitled to. I think they hoped to gut the workforce, neglect the company, make the place unbearably miserable, and then hope the remaining staff dived for the door which would let them save on redundancy payouts. Of course, it didn;t work that way, our customer base revolted, our products were too tied into their workflow for easy replacement and now with headcount halved and half the rest actively job-hunting, service standards had gone through the floor. They had to re-hire a bunch of new people to keep up, when their reputation stank in the industry and who didn't have the experience they'd let go. And now their customer base thinks they're flaky and unreliable and is actively finding ways to replace them (which, ironically, I've found productive work in helping with in my subsequent job) Employee motivation and morale is only something you need to think about if you care about the future of the company/team/project.
