M:TG was profitable and D&D a rounding error despite the 2nd renaissance it had with 3e. Maybe Mattel would have gotten it (and we'd have He-Man/Eternia D&D) or maybe some parasite Capital group would have ground it to dust like Toy R Us. Wizards was in the unfortunate sweet spot: big enough to be noticed, too small to be able to fend off larger fish. Remember, WotC could have gone the White Wolf route and become part of some other game publisher using Kickstarter to produce new books. The opposite of "soulless corporate" isn't necessarily Paizo.</blockquote>
