There are two ways to use the Realms: specific case and general case. In the general case, I tend to agree. Who cares. File the serial numbers off and move on. Phandelver (especially) and PotA both fell into this category. Please do more of this. It would be even better if they didn't have agents of the Harpers, Zhentarim, etc. called out in ever module; those have been easy enough to ignore, but they're still a constant emphasis of it being set in the Realms and I have to read the whole module before I'm sure it isn't actually important to the plot. In the specific case, enough dependencies on the Realms are in place that it doesn't neatly fit into another setting. HotDQ was this way. I tried to convert it to both my home brew and Eberron and was really surprised at how hard it was, mostly because of the geography. It would have been more of an "inspired by" thing. I get modules to reduce the amount of work I have to do. Frankly, the general story line wasn't good enough to be worth the effort, IMO. There isn't a clear line between the two. How much can you include the Harpers before it becomes tightly coupled to the Realms? Is the way goods flow through Baldur's Gate and/or Waterdeep important to the plot or is it window-dressing? If the author is grabbing names just to fill in blanks, groovy. If I would have to have the FRCS to understand, please exclude it. Also, including historic/political/etc. stuff that would have been in a 5E FRCS (like pages 15-16 of PotA) is exactly what I don't want. That should have been in a web supplement.
