Mayhem Armor Review
Mayhem Armor is the first building released in the Urban Mayhem line. The building is a gun shop with an Apartment and garage. The building is a 7x7 inch design for just the armory and apartment. The Garage itself is also a 7x7 space on its own. Both fit well in a “city block” created with streets from Streets of Mayhem. As with all World Works sets the block can be as large or as small as you like. The floor tiles come with a 1", 1.5" and no grid print outs. There is also a print out for a truck to go with the garage.
The detail in this set is amazing for Matt Lyons first release. The whole set is designed to be in the grittier part of the town or city it is placed in. The floors are dirty, the walls have mold and mildew along with peeling wall paper and chipped paint. The perfect place for your super villain to hold up, or your struggling super hero to live in.
The Apartment is designed to be stack able and there are interior walls that you can place anywhere to come up with a unique design on the inside for each and every build you do. There are some items missing, like a bathroom which would have been nice. Remember Danny Glover’s character in Predator 2? Where did the Pretator hold up to repair his damage that had been inflicted on him? A bathroom.... But the other items that are included are great. There is a window air conditioner so your build can look just like a slum in the west side of New York. The coolest item in the apartment is a poster of the spaceship from the First Light terrain set. The detail of the poster makes it fit right in as far as the seediness of the apartment, but also adds the bit of flavor that someone really lives there. The windows come with the ability to print on transparencies with is really, really nice to have actual see through windows.
The only drawback that I can come up with is that the walls should be blank (as far as fixtures like pictures) and these should be provided as separate entities. The Gentle Reader of my reviews will notice this theme through out my reviews. I would like pictures and other odds and ends separate so that I can print and hang them where I want them. But that is my only complaint and it is really a minor one. I think as World Works Games grows as a company this will come up more and more and hopefully it will be implemented in the near future.
The Armory is not really an Armory as in the National Guard type Armory, but a gun store. All seedy looking and an excellent place for the cops to go when some villain has more firepower than they do. The textures for the items inside the Armory are great. The gun cabinets and displays are well done and believable. This too has options for the windows either being normal cardstock or being printed on transparencies. Printing to transparency is very nice but takes getting used to. The model looks all the better because of it.
The instructions for this particular model are well done, especially with all of the actual items that need to be assembled for a believable terrain piece.
The cons of the whole set are that items on the walls that are permanent and it would be nice to be able to print those separately and put them where I think they should go. It also would have been nice to have 2-3 different brick colors to choose from. I’ve seen the normal red brick that this set is made up of, but I have also seen yellowish and white brick. Having the ability to choose from a small variety of colors would be nice as well.
I definitely recommend this set to the busy Game Master on the go who needs to be able to come up with great looking terrain inexpensively. It looks great and goes together very well. The ability to print as many as you need as well as the ability to modify the build makes this (and other Mayhem sets) a great value for the money spent on it.
