Raids were made on caravans entering and leaving the beleaguered town, slaying merchants and destroying goods. Hunters and scouts disappeared only to have their mangled corpses turn up hanging from the main gates; an unmistakable threat. Urg and Kitkazza did not stand idly by and watch their beloved town suffer, they knew that the drow had to be striking from a location on the surface, one that was close enough to the town for convenient attacks but no close enough to be found easily. Hours and hours were spent with every conceivable type of divination magic and finally Urg and Kitkazza's lucubration paid off.

Through the concentrated efforts of various divination spells Urg learned that a large force of drow were occupying a ruined ranger fort on the edge of the Lurkwood forest. Urg knew that he must act swiftly and surprise the drow on their own ground. Urg turned to his god for assistance and sent word to the grand temple of Tyr in Waterdeep. Urg, a devout follower of his god had performed many services over the years for his faith, a fact that did not go unnoticed in his time of need. In three days a force of 30 Tyrite warriors and clerics arrived at the gates of Longsaddle to lend the strength of their god. Along with the Tyrites Urg had managed to put together a force of 50 warriors of his own culled from the town guards and militia. Urg and Kitkazza wasted no time and led their small band of eager warriors through the gates of Longsaddle and north to do battle with the drow.

Urg and his strike force reached the edge of the Lurkwood forest the next day and made camp. Urg wished to do battle the following morning with the hope of using the drow vulnerability to sunlight against them but he never had the chance. The drow had been using their own divination magics and had been ready for Urg and his men; they attacked the camp in the middle of the night while the humans slumbered. Caught off guard Urg and his band suffered heavy casualties but with the aid of his and Kitkazza’a magic they managed to drive off the drow inflicting casualties of their own. A startling discovery was made during the chaos of the battle, a drow priestess leading the attack bore an unmistakable resemblance to Kitkazza and there could be little doubt that Kitkazza’s mother had come looking for her.

Ragged and discouraged Urg led his warriors into the Lurkwood the following morning in search of the drow fortress. They found the drow easily enough and were greeted by a hail of crossbow bolts from the ramparts of the old ranger fort. Urg and his men took cover beneath the sheltering trees and prepared to make a counter attack. The drow warriors manning the fort seemed to have no problem with the glaring sunlight and Urg was forced to use his magic to give his men a chance to approach the fort. Urg cast a spell that would deflect the drow crossbow bolts and then stepped into the open to draw their fire. As the drow concentrated their attack on Urg he launched multiple fireballs from his wand slaying many drow and blowing a gaping hole in the wooden walls of the fort. Urg’s men took advantage of the momentary distraction to stream forward and through the walls of the fort.

The battle that followed was brutal and long. Urg and Kitkazza matched spells with half a dozen drow mages and priests while the clerics of Tyr healed the wounded or launched offensive spells of their own. Finally the human warriors led by Urg routed the drow and surrounded the survivors who’s number included Kedvarra, Kitkazza’s mother. The Drow matron glared at her daughter with pure malice and heedless of the human warriors surrounding her began casting a spell that would erase her errant child’s life. Only Urg was quick enough to react to Kedvarra’s spell and all that he could do was throw himself in front of his wife as the drow matron surged forward her hand surrounded in a nimbus of crackling black energy. The spell that was intended for Kitkazza instead discharged on Urg and he felt a hideous cold surge through his body. A grim darkness hazed Urg’s mind and he knew that his life stood on the brink of extinguishments. Only Urg’s fierce ogre vitality saved him, that feral spark of life that existed in the ogre part of his being fought like a cornered animal and Urg forced the invading blackness of Kedvarra’s spell from his body. Her only chance to slay her daughter thwarted, Kedvarra threw her head back and screamed her defiance at the towering half-ogre that had ruined her all of her plans. She had no time to prepare another spell as Urg’s staff smashed into her head, breaking her neck and ending her miserable life.

After the death of Kedvarra the remaining drow threw down their weapons and pleaded for mercy. The drow were bound and would be taken back to Longsaddle to stand trial for their crimes. Kitkazza felt no remorse at the death of her only living parent but her mother’s motivations remained a mystery. A captive drow warrior who had been Kedvarra’s consort gave Urg and Kitkazza the answers they were looking for. In exchange for his life the drow warrior explained why they had left the Underdark in search of Kitkazza.

Kedvarra had been a powerful priestess of Lolth and she had climbed the ranks of the clergy with an alacrity that had only been seen by Lolth’s most favored. Her dalliance with Kitkazza’s father was generally ignored as a noble priestess could do whatever she wished with any slave at any time she wished. Her pregnancy was thought of as nothing more than an inconvenience as the babe would be sacrificed to Lolth shortly after birth increasing Lolth’s favor on the young preistess. Kedvarra never expected to feel anything for her newborn child other than the gleeful expectation of Lolth’s blessing after the child’s death. The unknown emotions that overcame her as she held Kitkazza in her arms confused and terrified her and in her weakness she spared the child and its father. Mercy is not a virtue extolled by Lolth and although no drow in Ched Nasad knew Kitkazza’s had survived or that she was half human, Kedvarra’s goddess was not pleased with her servant.

Kedvarra was stripped of all clerical ability by her spiteful goddess and became a pariah. Her house had no use for a female that did not have the favor of Lolth. The mercy Kedvarra had shown her infant daughter had cost her everything and a bitterness and hatred grew from that realization. Kedvarra spent years building a fortune for the mere purpose of hiring mercenaries to take to the surface and find her wayward child. Driven by hatred and an overwhelming desire to redeem herself in Lolth’s eyes Kedvarra eventually bought the mercenaries she needed and began the long trek to the surface. Kedvarra’s hatred for her daughter was a tangible force, and the depth of her malice was a shining beacon to Lolth. The chaotic goddess restored Kedvarra’s powers with the promise that if she failed again she would suffer in the demon web pits for all eternity. Filled once more with the power of her goddess, Kedvarra found the task of finding Kitkazza much easier. She followed Kitkazza’s trail to Skullport and eventually to the surface and Longsaddle.

The journey back to Longsaddle was a quiet one for Urg and Kitkazza as the past weighed heavy on both of their minds. When they reached Longsaddle they were welcomed back to the town with open arms and a palpable sense of relief that the town protectors had returned unscathed. The drow prisoners were tried, found guilty and executed, all save one. Nevekar, the drow who had traded his life for the information about Kitkazza’s mother was sent to Waterdeep with an armed guard to spend the rest of his long life in a prison cell. A large hoard of gold and gems had been found at the drow fort and Urg saw that the vast majority went to repaying the townsfolk for the suffering they had endured through the drow threat. Urg and Kitkazza returned to raising their son and to the study of magic, hoping they had fought their last battle with the past.
