Using 3.0/3.5 Monsters with Pathfinder?

It really depends on how much you want to stick with the rules. You should do slight modifications to them, as several things like 3.x' grapple vrs PF's CMB scores, feat changes, etc are a bit different. But overall they are very close.

I picked up the Pathfinder Bonus Bestiary as part of my swag for Free RPG day yesterday, and the creature listings are extremely similar to 3.x. I should think you would be prefectly alright if you just want to mod the creature's on the fly.

Rhun, could you do a bit of a side-by-side comparison of a monster or two from the bonus bestiary? AC, attack bonus, 3.5 grapple vs. Pathfinder CMB, just some numbers for comparison purposes would be very illuminating.

I'm not Rhun, but I scored a Bonus Bestiary yesterday and am feeling generous. ;) A lot of the critters are actually from the ToH and not SRD (about 50-50), so I'll go through the SRD ones in separate posts below and add ToH later if people want.

BTW, this is a nice little book. If the full Bestiary sticks to the 1 monster per page format, it will be worth the price just for the extra fluff on the SRD monsters. The fluff in this reminds me more of the "supplementary" monster manuals and 3pp monster books like the ToH and Advanced Bestiary.

Allip

Just the differences (PBB=Pathfinder Bonus Bestiary):

Allip
hp: SRD 4d12 PBB 4d8+12 (looks like +Cha/HD)
AC: SRD 15 PBB 14 (decrease in deflection from reduced Cha)
For save: SRD +1 PBB +4 (looks like Cha bonus again)
SRD turn resistance PBB channel resistance
SRD grapple -, PBB CMB +3 CMD 17
melee attack bonus: SRD +3 PBB +4 (free weapon finesse?)
Cha: SRD 18 PBB 16
Skills: reorganized, PBB includes Fly
Treasure: SRD none PBB 800 gp
Babble: SRD based on hypnotism PBB fascination
incorporeal touch damage: SRD 1d4 Wis drain PBB 1d4 Wis damage (+1 drain on critical rather than x2 damage)
Organization: SRD solitary PBB solitary, pair, or haunt (4-6)

Also, PBB doesn't list advancement for any critters. Does anyone know if that's intentional?

Overall, the allip looks pretty much the same. For CR 3 (same in both books), I like the Wis damage on the touch better than the drain, too.

More later, gotta head out...

Lack of advancement rules is intentional. Look for more information on this in the actual Bestiary, which handles it somewhat differently than in the past.

Glad so many folks are digging the Bonus Bestiary. It was a joy to put together, and my only regret is that some of the guys in there didn't make it into the final book.

As an added note, all monsters get at least one full page in the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary, as in the Bonus Bestiary (but the layout for the final book is even more interesting and user-friendly). Some uber monsters like pit fiends and balors and dragons get a two-page spread.

I'm really looking forward to this book. Sadly, this year (like the years before) no shop in Italy participates in the program... luckily, Paizo will put the book on sale next Monday, IIRC. :)

Dragonne

Erik -- thanks for the news, that's excellent news about the page count per monster! And I look forward to the advancement section.

Dragonne
AC: SRD 18 (+7 natural) PBB 19 (+8 natural)
Attacks: SRD 2 claws +7 melee PBB 2 claws +12 melee (this looks like difference with secondary natural attacks, but it could just be the new format stat block)
Roar: SRD save DC is Cha-based PBB save DC is Con-based
SRD grapple +17 PBB CMB +14 CMD 26
Skills: rearranged somewhat
Feats: PBB adds Power Attack (now a feat every odd HD, I guess)
Treasure: SRD double standard PBB 2600 gp
