Using AU spellcasters with DnD3.5 non-spellcasters

whydirt

First Post
What, if anything, do I need to do to use the AU spellcasters (Greenbond, Mage Blade, Magister, Runethane, and Witch) alongside the traditional DnD non-spellcasters (Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue)? I realize that trying to mix spell systems would be difficult, but I like the more generic non-spellcasters, at least for my homebrew. I might also throw in the Akashic and Unfettered (but call them Swashbucklers or something).

Thoughts?

Au

Umm, unless you are using the variant rules Unearthed Arcana, the Ranger and Paladin are spellcasters.

Man, you are something else. He said traditional non-spellcasters. Dork.

If you own the Diamond Throne campaign book, you might want to refamiliarize with it along with the DnD Greyhawk Gazetteer.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not sure what this means. My initial post may not have been clear enough, so I'll restate that my concern is about class balance among the different classes. Will the group of classes I'm taking from AU obviously overshadow those from vanilla DnD or vice versa? If so, how should tweak around the problem areas?

Okay. Now I understand. If you are not aware of it the Oathsworn is to Arcana Unearthed as the Monk is to DnD. The Greenbond is to AU as the Druid is to DnD. The mind Witch is a type of Psion (or Psychic Warrior). The Champion reads as variant type of Paladin. The Mage blade equates to the Miniature's Handbook Warmage. I guess the Totem Warrior translates to DnD as a variant Barbarian. The Unfettered as a the AU Rogue. The Warmain equates to DnDs Fighter (I think).

I suggest you weigh the pros and cons of running a mixed campaign carefully. Or perhaps, think up some changes to the DnD or AU classes to suit the campaign.

Nope. They would work just fine in parallel. (I'm starting to implement this in a message board game - cool so far.) The AU classes use the AU book for their abilities, and the D&D classes use the 3.5 book for theirs. Just decide which sets of rules you're using (some slight but key differences like standing up - provokes/doesn't provoke an AoO depending) outside of the two sets of classes. Either give the D&D classes an extra bonus feat, or take that away from the AU classes. Monte's running a combo campaign where he allowed D&D classes, and gave them the bonus feat, so that's probably the way to go.
