Using ECL as an alternative to Gestalts?

I've been bouncing this idea around for a while, and thought you folks could help...

A character can choose a core class, and increase its overall power by taking an ECL hit. Core class abilities could not be 'purchased' outside of their class.

For example, a fighter could increase their Ref and WIll saves to 'Good' by taking a +2 ECL (1 for each). Their base ability would be their advanced feat progression.

A wizard could increase their BaB, Fort, and Ref saves with a +5 ECL hit (2 for each increase in BaB, 1 for each save increase). Their base ability would be their spells.

My biggest problem is adapting this to clerics and monks (the best of everything with a +2 ECL!?), although I'm sure there are others. Maybe set up the monk so that the increase in the Flurry of blows BaB also requires an ECL increase?

So what you are saying is that a 1st level fighter with a +2 to will and reflex saves is as powerful as a 3rd level fighter?

This doesn't work out.

If saves are that important the fighter could easily have teken the iron will and lightning reflexes feats by 3rd level.

Don't see how that is an "alternative" to Gestalts.

The alternative is, surely, alter the classes to suit your desired progression.
For example, give fighters good saves, but set XPs needed for next level at Base x 1 1/2 or give 1/2 XPs for everything.
Much easier than mucking about with ECLs.
