Using MnM for Rifts?

I was just listening to Land of Confusion by Genesis and was thinking of Rifts and Mutants and Masterminds.

I have an idea now to take the background fluff of Rifts and apply it to an MnM game. I'd probably want to do this in an PbP game.

Two questions: Does the idea have merit? I've never GM'd MnM before, is the a GM's Guide I can get my hands on?

Clarification: The only two MNm books I own are the 1.0 and 2.0 system books.

Anything to fit a better system to the RIFTS setting gets my vote ;) There have been some conversions done of RIFTS but they never last on the web long or are distributed privately.

Let me join in singing the oft repeated song: "I love RIFTS' fluff, but the crunch is atrocious!"

I've run RIFTS a few times, and I've used the fluff with other systems- the latter experience was more satisfying. Mostly, I used HERO as my substitute system.

As you probably know, M&M resembles the lovechild of 3.X and HERO. Its mechanics and terminology originate in WotC's product, and its flexibility is very similar to HERO's.

And like HERO, I think you'll find M&M an excellent RPG system in which to GM a RIFTS-based campaign.

RUN WITH IT!

M&M is in its 2nd edition right now, so you should be able to find it pretty easily. If you're on a budget, track down the 1Ed books. Most of all, check out the boards at Atomic Think Tank. Those guys are full of good ideas. (I wish I could help you more- M&M is my 2nd favorite RPG system- just behind HERO and just ahead of 3.X- but I don't get to play it that often.)

Running RIFTS with M&M should be pretty straight forward. I recommend using the 2nd edition rules. There is a Masterminds Manual (DM's guide) for M&M but it's not really necessary. Most of its content is rules system tweaks to get a certain effect, and Rifts doesn't really need that (in my view). The core rules of M&M would do it all the justice it deserves.

And Glitterboy will be king, once again.
