I am a big believer in usig history in games, History Channel is a major resourse.

Just yesterday on Modern Marvels they had the history of plumbing, some think that lead pipes could have been one of the reasons leading to the fall of Rome and don't forget all those deaths due to backed up pumbing from flooding!

Yowzers, those tunnels look just like the sample map in a "journalism" piece in Games magazine about AD&D from the mid-80's.

In a pinch, one can get lots of great story ideas just by taking a piece of history and changing the names to match known NPC names.
