I had a player do this in a game a few sessions ago:
The ranger is grabbed by some big nasty monster. Next round, he is going to lose his grapple check and be swallowed. The sorcerer whips out a teleport scroll, casts it, and sends his hawk familiar to go touch the ranger. The ranger and the sorcerer are teleported to some safe area.
The first time this was used, the PCs were in the jungle, far from anyone able to raise dead. The death of the ranger would have held up the adventure as the PCs returned home to have him raised. I let it work because I love to reward clever players who bend the rules.
