Value of an item that grants +10' to speed?

I introduced an ioun stone that grants a +10' enhancement bonus to a creature's base speed. What do you think that's worth?

For now, I'm saying that it won't stack with anything. That barbarian/monk/centaur with Horseshoes of Speed isn't going to be going any faster because of this thing.

Well, think of it as semi-replicating a spell effect. It's one-third as good as Expeditious Retreat, a first-level spell. So 1 (spell level) x 1 (caster level) x 2000 (continuous) x 2 (duration) x 2 (no slot) = 8000 gp -- if it gave a full 30 ft bonus. It only gives a third of that. In keeping with most other bonuses, multiply not by one-third, but by its square root: 8000 * 0.577 = ~4620. I'd probably place it, then, at 4500. However, I would let it stack with anything besides another enhancement bonus, otherwise it's yet another exception. It you force it to unstack, I'd probably drop the price by a third, down to 3000 or 3500.

You should also compare it to existing magic items (the golden rule).

Boots of Striding & Springing grant +10 speed and cost 5,500 gp. They also give a +5 bonus on Jump checks so the price should be slightly less. Maybe 4,500 to 5,000.

Of course, an ioun stone doesn't take up an existing item slot so maybe 5,000 gp is about right.

permanent longstrider?

4000 gp

My first instinct was to base the price off of a permanent Longstrider spell effect.

From page 284 dmg:

continuous spell effect = spell level x caster level x 2,000 gp (footnote indicates a further price modification if the duration is anything OTHER than 1 hr / level, but since longstrider is, in fact, 1 hr / lvl, this pricing seems right)

Longstrider is a 1st level spell, so....

1 x 1 x 2,000 = 2000 gp

and because the item is an Ioun Stone, it has no space limitation. This multiplies the entire cost by 2, so....

2000 x 2 = 4000 gp

Looks like a 4000 gp magic item to me.

Thanks, everybody! That's right about what I was thinking, just based on how "useful" I think it would be. I was figuring about 3-4000.

Anyways, thanks for the great analyses!

TheBaron: Heh, I forgot about Longstrider... I don't play nature-types often enough. Your analysis make better sense than mine... although we both came out around the same number. :) (Huh, the spells must actually be balanced, then.)
