D&D 5E Vampiric Touch and an initial miss

Just re-reading the spell for the first time in a long time and it seems I may have initially misread it.

I am casting it on Self (me), and then making my attack.

So If I miss with my initial melee spell attack, can I maintain concentration on myself and try again next round?

This isn't how I though it worked, but recently re-reading it, I am aware I may have misinterpreted it.

If this is the case, it is quite a bit better than I thought.

It’s even better, whether you hit or miss, you can continue to make the attack every round until the duration is over
