I finished a three year long campaign recently (or, it was finished for me when my work schedule changed unexpectedly), and I've found myself really wanting to revisit the world my players and I built together. The basic gist behind the setting (I hesitate to call it a whole world) is this. There is a large city, set against the coast, which is the last remaining center of culture left after a continent-wide war ravaged the civilization that existed before. The PCs defended the city from an invasion from the Far Realm, and became the greatest heroes of an age. What I want to do is show the war that came before them, but I want to show it from the point of view of the other side, the point of view of the monsters. From the beginning, I had the idea that neither side were the "good guys". That both sides contributed to the war, and both sides were equally at fault for such a bloody and devastating conflict. The easiest, and most fun, way of really showing that is to let the players be the goblins, gnolls, orcs, etc. and be the advance unit (the Vanguard) for their army against the "civilized" nation of humans, elves, dwarves, etc. I know it's not particularly original, but it's not something I've ever personally taken part in, and it's an idea that I've recently found myself very taken with and inspired to work on. What I plan to do is design five different Adventure Sites. Kind of Gardmore Abbey-style sandbox locations where the PCs will have several different objectives, and it will be up to them how they get them done. Things like recruiting allies, securing important resources, scouting potential base sites, etc. And, everything they do, whether it is successful or not, will add or subtract from their chances of winning the major battle at the end of the campaign, the Battle of Westfall. Each adventure site will also have a major battle they will help direct, and I plan on either trying to develop some sort of large scale combat simulation system (or borrowing from someone else's), or a series of encounters to show how their characters changed the course of a particular battle. As I said, I have it all planned out, I just need to sit and write it all out, but I plan on organizing my thoughts on a blog, in case anyone is interested in reading about such a thing, or has any input on how to get from where I am - an outline of the campaign and the major events - to the goal - a completed heroic-tier campaign guide. Vanguard I have posted only once so far, this morning. It's just an introduction to the campaign, sort of the thing you'd read on the back of a book, if it were being published, and a personal word from me on my plans. Anyway, I hope this is something that a few people are interested in, because I'm very excited about working on it, and I'd love to get some feedback from this community as I go about my work. Thanks, everyone.
