A few weeks late, because my wife wanted to see this one with me, so we had to wait for a free evening when we could get a babysitter and all that -- we went to see War of the Worlds with some friends of ours earlier this evening. After the movie, they expressed some disatisfaction with the movie. "It was good," they said, "but I would have liked it better if it was more like the tape." "Huh?" I inquired. "What tape? Do you have the original book on tape?" "No, not that." "What, the famous radio play with Orson Welles?" "No, not that either. Something else." So, when we get out to our cars, they pull out this double cassette tape they have; the War of the Worlds musical. "So let me get this straight," I say. "You're complaining that the movie wasn't enough like the musical and you think it would have been better if it was?" "Well, yeah! It's really good!" "Err.... no comment." I was completely baffled by that conversation. I liked the new War of the Worlds movie quite a lot, but I can see some criticisms made towards it that I at least think are plausible. That it's too divergent from the musical though--I never expected to hear that!
