Taking into account the fact that your message is well structured, intelligent with a proficient in prose, I would put forth the argument that Jerry Holkins is not smarter than us. At the very least, his is an equal, but no better (with a plus or minus up to and equal to zero). I walk on unstable ground as I like Jerry, err Tycho. Nine times out of time, he has never steered me wrong. I don't believe this is him playing a role. I think he broke form and let loose a cannonade of curses to a target which didn't deserve the attack. By "playing his role" instead of meeting Ebert as part of an intelligent debate, he fell into a dismissive role. He is not the leading edge of the debate. He's the one with the larger megaphone with masses surrounding him, cheering every morsel of raving rant coming out of his mouth. Tycho does not represent my generation (which is his generation and your generation) but the one after, the one prone to not respect their elders. Give them a few years, and that will change. Additionally, I will also support the use of profanity. Jerry is master at it, and he used it skillfully here, he just went too far and directed it to the wrong target. He turned on his "Jack Thompson Random Insult Generator" and let it fire out a few clever quips. What he have here, diverting back to the definition of art, is a looming global catharsis on the definition of art. The problem is that it is occurring within the digital generation and those still focusing on older media haven't gotten the email. Roger is not out to lunch on this. Those out there still decrying rap music are not going to be convinced video games are any more art, the same with people still swimming against the waves of comic books and films. Roger is only one degree off the mark. I for one am cutting him some slack. :)
