But one striking thing was that both a lot of the proposed historical settings and the proposed fantasy/SF settings would require an overhauled Total War engine that could properly cope with using cover and there being a lot of vehicles, artillery, etc. This tied in with some of the hiring ads which had hinted at a new engine which could handle new gameplay like that. Whatever CA are working on, they've pulled all the Total War teams on to it except CA Sofia (who are still on WH3). I'd personally say it's most likely to be 40K, given the huge amounts of money the Warhammer Fantasy games have made for them, but I can't rule out a major historical game - if it is historical I'd expect it to be Medieval 3 most likely, which a small chance of Three Kingdoms 2 (which they already cancelled once, but I could see them going back).
There have been many attempts at this but they've all been flops, because either the audience isn't there, or they're not finding it somehow. Couple of examples that flopped less than others below: https://www.diabotical.com/ There was also a decent new Unreal Tournament which was slowly gaining some popularity but bloody Epic killed it for no good reason. (I think UT is inherently more accessible than Q3-style games were - a genuine problem with Q3 was that a even a moderate skill gap can lead to vast kill count differences, and total domination of a map. That was an issue in Q2 and Q1/QuakeWorld too. This is partly why games with low Time To Kill and a good chance of getting a "lucky kill" on even a good player - often due to being inherently more chaotic - tend to be more popular - you don't get the "lockout" effect to the same degree. I don't think e-sports audiences love that either.) You may be in luck, we shall see, but Creative Assembly have been rumoured to be working on a 40K Total War game for 3+ years now. Hiring ads and some general leaks have supported this, but what really fanned the flames massively re: speculation on this was a couple of years ago CA sent out a detailed survey to a lot of people (including me), and on that survey they listed tons of settings that they could do for a fantasy or sci-fi Total War, and separately for a historical Total War. 40K was among them, but there were a lot of less plausible ones too (like MCU) so by itself that didn't mean much.
