This review is for Villains by James Jacobs. Published by Bastion Press, this 96-page full color book is filled with all manner of NPCs that fit the role of villain. Each entry comes fully detailed with statistics, background history, motivations, personality, physical appearance, tactics, a favored minion (henchman), and suggestions for use in a campaign at three different levels – low, mid and high. What separates Villains from other NPC books is the depth of detail and the diversity of the villains. All levels are represented from Challenge Rating 1 to 25 and the numbers of different races that may serve as an arch nemesis are impressive. Ever think about designing a half-orc barbarian who is also a werewolf? How about a dwarven druid that is capable of wild shaping into a predatory dinosaur? What about a 19th level sorcerer that happens to be a kobold lich? Who would have ever thought a Fiendish Dire Shark could make a masterful villain? The selection in Villains is certainly well conceived and thought out. The appendices contain a new use for the Heal skill, new spells, new magic items, new monsters, and new prestige classes. The new prestige classes are perfect for your favorite bad guys. Classes like Bloodtracker, Dinosaur Cultist, Gutter Stalker, and Sea Reaver will give your villains abilities that will leave your players doing some fancy footwork to avoid being squished like bugs. Overall, Villains is an excellent resource for GMs looking for something more for their campaigns. For $24.95 you get some really excellent villains to throw against your players both directly and from behind the scenes. It is a worthy book and comes highly recommended.
