Something to consider. ...Not allowing in your game. Earlier I realized a way to make a cellphone using magic from low level spells. It used a miniature portal inside a gem with a wand of permanent Message on target with a constant area effect. The wand fires through the portal at the opposite gem activating the Message spell with area effect set up so anyone inside the area of effect hears what I'm saying on the other end. Their setup also has a the same kind of wand and fires back in kind so I can hear them. Interesting yes, but the real problems is when you take the portal and mix it with a magical item on the other side that buffs everyone within an area. The area of affect would extend through the portal to the other side. Take a magical item which grants Feats, give it an area of effect, then carry the other end of the portal with you while keeping party members in range of the effect. Place a contingent spell on the portal so that it automatically shuts down when it would be affected by anyone trying the Shatter spell or Mordenkainen's Disjuntion in an attempt to hit the source of the area buffing and it will live to be accessed later once a new portal is made. Unfortunately: Portals cost a lot, so it'll be a while before the internet can be created. The smallest portal that can apparently be created is a foot across. That's no cellphone. Making them work like the Stargate so you can choose who you're talking to either doesn't exist or will up the price even more. On the upside, if you want to use a portal for just war, this is a way to leave your tree trunk sized wand of extreme maximized Fireball at home pointing directly at the twin of the portal in your backpack. Try not to roast any kingdoms. Hah ha ha! Oh my, I forgot. You could place these small portals on a tiny aircraft and leave the giant, heavy cannons on the other end. Micro heavy bomber.
