Void Point Maximization (L5R RPG)

First Post
For anyone who has used/played the L5R d20 version of Rokugan, can you elaborate on the use of Void Points? We are trying to figure out all the methods by which one can obtain void points. How they can increase their void points, and is there a cap on the number of void points a person can have/use?

If you can reference your findings it would be appreciated.

Right now, our current info comes from the Void Use feat which grants 2 Void Points. The only way that this seems to go up is through the taking of Depths of the Void, which grants 3 additional void points (max 5 void points) per the errata. There are a handful of "void" spells which can increase the number of void points by 1 point per spell, up to a cap of double the maximum, which would be 10 void points. There may also be magic items which grant void points, but it isn't clear how these factor into any caps (if at all) or feats.

Your help is appreciated!

If you're looking to max out Void, pick up Secrets of the Phoenix. Among the items of note: an amulet that adds 2 Void to your total and the Greater Depths of the Void feat (a kiho feat, so not everyone uses it). Magic of Rokugan also has a lot more void spells that are worth checking out. THere is no maximum to the number of Void points a character can have, barring some strange situation (e.g. he picks up Shadow Points).

The Depths of the Void feat increases your total Void maximum by two. That's how you get a good number of 'em. The inkyo monk gains this feat for free several times. I believe there are a few Void-related PrCs - Void Master and Naga Akasha Master, I think.

Anyone can take Kiho feats.

Also, two things about Depths of the Void:

  • The Depths of the Void feat increases your total Void maximum by two.
  • The only way that this seems to go up is through the taking of Depths of the Void, which grants 3 additional void points (max 5 void points) per the errata.

Neither of these statements is correct. Depths gives you three Void, not two (I understand the first printing said two but this has been errataed, and my second printing definitely says three). And there is no whif of anything suggesting a limit of five Void Points anywhere, in fact you are explicitly allowed (indeed, almost encouraged) to take Depths more than once.

Using just Rokugan, you can really rack up the Void Points by playing an Inkyo and taking Depths at every opportunity. You can get something like 26 by 12th level or so. I don't see anything in Magic of Rokugan increasing this (there are tons of very cool Void spells in there, but that's orthogonal to the discussion). It is entirely possible Secrets of the Phoenix gives even more opportunities to get them - that seems like a very Phoenix thing to want.

Wow! Excellent feedback. Thanks Eric!

Thanks also to Jeffh, Steeldraco, and Westwind for your feedback. Here's my new understanding:

Void Use: Grants 2 Void Points

Then,

Depth of the Void: Grants 3 additional Void Points, and may be taken an unlimited number of times, each time, it grants three more void points.

Gotcha! Now the "void magic" and "void costs" seem to make more sense. Thanks!
