Vorpal Variant

Hey, everyone. I came up with an idea for a variant rule for Vorpal, and I was wondering if it would work. Basically, whenever you roll a natural 20 with a vorpal weapon, you sever the extremity of your choice. You could choose to cut off its arm, leg, head, whatever- I figured it wouldn't be any more powerful than it already is, as there aren't many things that would be hurt more from losing an arm than from losing their head. But what if you were especially sadistic, and you enjoyed torturing people in battle, so you cut off their legs. Or what if you're a Paladin, and you are granted a +1 Holy Axiomatic Vorpal Longsword, but you don't like killing people outright, so you cut off the bad guy's main hand instead to incapacitate him. Also, I feel that there simply aren't rules for losing any limbs in battle, by the rules (and yet there's plenty of things to counter such an event, such as the Regenerate spell). They specifically mention losing limbs in certain spells and effects, and yet it almost never happens except when a DM gets pissed off.

What do you guys think?
