Instead of a cost in XP and GP to level up an item, ancestral relics have an Honor score requirement (using the Honor mechanic from the Kaidan setting), and event triggers. In some cases its to perform an act in favor of the downtrodden or even an enemy - it varies with each item and event trigger.
