Wall and Blade Barrier spells

Do they need to be 'resting' on the ground? Or, can they be cast 5' or more feet in the air?

Mostly thinking of Wall of Force but the same goes for all the wall spells. And Blade Barrier.

Thanks,

At least according to the SRD, the physical wall spells (Iron, Stone, Ice) all require some sort of physical means of support or to be anchored in some way. The non-physical Wall spells (Force, Fire, Blade Barrier) have no such mention. Given the nature of the non-physical walls, I don't see why they couldn't be cast "in the air", up to the limit of the range of the spell.

Of course there are a couple of anomalies. Wall of Thorns is obviously physical, but doesn't make any mention of needing to be "supported" in some fashion. Wind Wall is likewise obviously non-physical, but does by way of contrast mention "along the ground". At least implying that it needs to be on the ground.

Thanks for the answer!

So, you consider a Wall of Force to be non-physical? I've alwasy pictured it more... solid than that.

It's not a physical object in the sense that it is not made of matter, like stone or ice are. Light isn't a physical object for example, but it does exert pressure and has a physical effect on things. So while a force effect isn't "physical", this doesn't mean it can't have physical effects.
