Wall of Force

Hi,

Some Wall spells allow saves when they are cast near someone.

There is no such save for Wall of Force. As a DM i used it to surround a PC completely.

Is there no save because its invisible? If so if you can see invisibility then would you
agree a save should be allowed?

Cheers

There is no save because, as written, it cannot be used that way.
It forms a "flat, vertical plane".
Of course, as DM, you have some leeway, but this would not be the correct forum for that discussion...

Not sure u can cast it ON somebody? otherwise, the wall always win i guess, pushing them to either side of it. Vision has about nothing to do with it.

Btw, Does the description of the wall state that you can make a wall of Force in a Circle, or Square or Sphere? Else you cannot surround anybody within it... (without getting help from other settings or having at least 3 castings of the wall

It's possible that the 3.0 version of the spell is being used, which did allow for a hemispherical configuration. IIRC, that version of the spell allowed no save, See Invisibility or no.

Hi,

Oh, me bad then. So you cannot make a box, with 4 sides?
Its flat and vertical..i guess its not a plane. Oh well the PC spent a while hacking away at the floor (which was near the edge of a pit) with his admantine double bladded sword.

From the SRD "The caster can form the wall into a flat, vertical plane whose area is up to one 10-foot square per level. The wall must be continuous and unbroken when formed. If its surface is broken by any object or creature, the spell fails. "

A wall of force is flat. (A straight line on the map).

Use forcecage instead.

Geoff.

I agree with the commnents above. The wall of force is flat and further it automatically fails is someone is in the way negating the need for a save. This could ocurr when attempting to cast the spell diagonally on a grid, where one of the squares are occupied, or when trying to create the wall through a large creature.

I think it originally grants no save because there is no reason. The wall doesn't directly "affect" people, it appears there and that's it.

Other walls might have saves for special reasons:

Wall of Iron -> can be used to crash someone
Wall of Stone -> can be used to imprison someone

Wall of Ice is weird because people can roll a ST to prevent the wall from forming. But it must be a special case, like the ice takes some second to assemble into a wall while you're casting, while all other walls appear instantaneously.

I must correct you. This is the correct forum for that discussion. Minor variants and interpretations are all valid topics for conversation in the rules forum.

Thanks.
