What you've posted makes sense, an experienced contractor should be able to put it into a wall in a day or a weekend.

But I must admit, in a world with magic and creative thinking, this sounds plainly mundane. As everyone else has commented, why not consider more imaginative and crafty options?
 


I don't know how much it will help, but I believe the Stronghold Builder's Guide had rules for setting traps in one's home and such. The Dragon magazine that had additions to the SBG had an entry for concealed passages.
