We seem to have a number of people who don't use Microsoft products here so does anyone have a good email client that isn't based upon outlook, and it's infinite number of viruses, but is capable of handling a PST file and routing messages to various folders automatically?

Cheap is good, but dependability is better.

Try Calypso. It's free and has the ability to route messages to various folders automagically, handle multiple email accounts, and other advanced features. While it can't read a PST file directly, if you export your messages to .EML format, it can import them.

What viruses currently can get thru Outlook's updates from Microsoft and an updated virus protection software?

Any new virus cooked up since the last update to either, designed to get around the latest signature files and patches, and to exploit whatever newly-discovered exploit there is in Windows. In short, viruses are a moving target, and just because you have the latest updates doesn't mean you're completely safe.

Anyway, I personally use Pegasus Mail. I don't know if it'd have everything that's being looked for, but it's free, powerful, and worth a look.

FWIW, the most common "Outlook Viruses" are rendedered useless by Outlook 2000 Service Pack 2 or later; it's impossible to use them to mass-mail from script.

I use "Thunderbird" the email client only version of Mozilla (aka Netscape 7). It's free, fast, small, and does a great job. You can find it at http://www.mozilla.org/

I recently switched to Thunderbird as well. I used to use Eudora Light, but I've been getting a lot of spam lately and wanted to try something that used a Bayesian filter to help get rid of it (and which I didn't have to pay for :)). So far, Thunderbird has worked great.

I'm quite partial to Eudora (v6) myself. I paid for my version (not too much), but you can get full features for free if you're willing to put up with corner-ads. No viruses (ever, AFAIK), advanced filtering (and other) capabilities, and built-in spam destruction. <www.eudora.com> for more details.

I second this. I also paid for my version of Eudora after using it for about a month. Great email program.

Okay I just gave Eudora a try and set up was easy enough but I can get it to look like outlook. Inbox/folders on the left and message on the right I can force it to open it pops up a new window...

So I'm off to try another one... Do any of you know if any of them use only one window for the entire mailbox minus the email you’re working upon?
