On days he could manage to skip away from fishing he'd often spend them in the common room of the local inn, the <em>Spar and Mast</em>, listening to the sailors swap stories of adventure and the high seas. It is likely he would have left for the ocean when he came of age, if fate hadn't intervened...</p><p></p><p>Barely sixteen, Karris returned one afternoon to a cloud of black smoke and burned houses - and the village populace in chains, having been attacked by a band of slavers. It wasn't long before the young man was spotted, and though he put up a valiant fight, clapped into irons along with his family and friends - those who hadn't been killed for struggling already.</p><p></p><p>Yet, fate turned again, and the pirate ship was overtaken several weeks later, by a ship bearing the flag of a [nearby good kingdom.] After a vicious battle, the naval ship pulled away, Karris on board, as well as a few other survivors... but the pirate ship was sunk, taking his loved ones with it.</p><p></p><p>Today, a half-dozen years later, Karris is living his dream of being a sailor, albeit via a twisted route he would have never chosen. He stayed on with the sailors, who turned out to be "honest pirates," bearing a letter of marquis from the local lord. A demon with a bow, Karris is generally up on the highest mast, keeping a lookout and always to first to begin showering an enemy ship with arrows... reserving a special hatred for slavers.</p></blockquote><p></p>
