I received a submission that had alot of mechanics taken from the srds, and when I requested some additional newer mechanics, she replied "your post said I can only use the SRDs". I need to clarify this. I put in the "use only SRD" requirement because I wanted to make sure that authors do not steal anything from the Players Handbook or any other d20 sourcebooks. New mechanics, new ideas are all encouraged, but please do not take anything from other books. For example, you can say that your class can cast "Acid arrow" as supernatural ability, because Acid Arrow is in the SRD. But you cannot use the term "Melf's Acid Arrow", which is a copyrighted term that comes from the Players Handbook. Both spells are exactly the same, but one is OGC and the other is not. Another example is Fast Foward games, who had to remove the following books off the shelves and destroy them: Enchanted Locations: Crypts and Tombs; Dungeon World; Dungeon World: Secrets of the Enemy Capital; and Rings of Power. They had do so because they all contained material that belongs to wotc and was not OGC. Details here: http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/2636.html Beyond that, sky is the limit. By all means make up your own d20 game mechanics and rules for your submission. Just make sure that it comes from you your own imagination and/or the SRDs. For example, in my upcoming Unorthodox Bards book I put in a Perform ability that grants the Bard variable Damage Reduction, called War-Song. I did not call it "Warsong" nor did I call it "Bigby's War-song". Taking anything from the Dungeon Masters Guide, Players Handbook, Monster Manual, or any other published book is just a bad idea. This should be true for anything you submit to anyone. If you have a draft and need help fleshing out your submission, email me and I will assist. You can also catch me on the psionics.net's IRC server (I will be in the Heroclix Channel or the dnd3e channel). Just have fun with it and be original, and you will be fine. ~Le
