War of Souls any good?

So what's the opinion from the folks who have read the first two books? I'm not expecting Tolkien, Jordan, or Martin here, but is it at least better than Dragons of Summer Flame?

The Chronicles were one of my favorites when I was in High School, but I think the franchise has gone downhill after the Time of the Twins. Will War of Souls renew my interest?

I'd say yes. I've only read the Hickman & Weis books (Chronicles, Legends, 2nd Gen, DoaSF, and WoS) and the first two books of the War of Souls were some of their best stuff yet.

They've had to play within the boundaries of what was set by set in the time between to a degree, but the changes they're doing seem their own. Likewise, the new characters they've got are great.

If you're an old-school DL fan (like me), I'd say pick it up. The first two books are out in softcover, and I loved both of them (and, like I said, I'm picky with what DL I read)...

The third book comes out in HC this April, I believe, then in SC this fall...

Well, I've only read the first book so far, but will get the second when I can find it in a used book store. I thought it was rather good, but not quite as engaging as Chronicles or Legends. This might be because I never really cared for the 5th age stuff to begin with.

Yes, the series is good. Some big fans of the older characters may not like some of the changes (what happens to Palin, and Laura, for example), but I like them.

Plus you can tell from the very beginning that they are planning on nullifying the entire 5th age as if it had never happened -- essentially writing off all those years from when TSR told Weiss/Hickman to wreck the world till now. Good for them! :D

The frist book was good the second book is great and i can't wait for the third book.

Appearantly i one of the few people that liked anything from the fifth age, i thought dragons of a new age was a good series and i'm enjoyign the grimwulf saga, or any thing not by wies and hickman for that matter. I admit there was a llot of krap, but there are hidden gems there, the elven nations, and most of the meeetings sextet, and defenders of magic are all good examples.

As for the war of souls, this is a very good series, it's really cleaning house and freeing things up to reclame former glory.
The series does have a very different feal than chronicles though, and ledgends for that matter. It reminds me more of Marvel comics age of apocalpse than any of the previous dragonlance series.

I consider this to be an excellent series to pick up. I read books at my library then buy them. The 3rd book I am gonna directly buy.
Mainly because one of my favorite characters is coming back.
I won't tell because some people may get mad, but I think he will be in there.

A Fav character is coming back in the 3rd book? Odd...

Well, you don't have to tell us exactly who, but could you at least point to where you found out about this character? 'cause I'd *like* to know...

I didn't like the fact that Porthios and Alhanna's son was fully grown. Goldmoon would most certainly be dead by the time an elf born when she was in her 20's(?) was fully grown. I thought it was very sloppy.

Thank you for the replies. I appreciate the insight. My birthday is in a couple of weeks and I think I'll be asking for the first book at least and probably the second along with it.
