If it was an oversight on their part, there’s absolutely no way they weren’t aware of it before the PHB went live on DDB.
There is a long list of egregious misses in the 2024 PHB that WotC was clearly aware of (presuming they paid the slightest attention to UA feedback), and that they haven't addressed yet. This doesn't mean they actually intended to make those changes.

For whatever reason, WotC's standard operating procedure across the board when making mistakes is to just ignore the problem and assume it will disappear because only a tiny fraction of the most hardcore nerds will even notice it.

That or they're aware power creep sells.

Nah, it’s a pretty short list really. Some people just have an axe to grind.

That's the fluff text but it ain't the rule. The actual rule is "You can make an Opportunity Attack when a creature that you can see leaves your reach." It used to say "hostile creature" but now it does not. I do not think they removed the word "hostile" by accident, although it is technically possible.
What’s fluff text? Where is it defined in the rules? Where does it say it isn’t part of the rule?

Last night before Tue night game I and the 2 other DMs that reguallary run talked about it... as long as you are spending a feat and a spell slot we are all good with this 'cheese'

Yes, buff and heal as a reaction is cool and powerful, but it is also team work. Someone taking a feat to spend there resources buffing/healing others is the LEAST of our worries for game balance.

Two points:

1. The new 2024 book is much more rules-lawyerly in general. Hostile is actually in the rules glossary:

"A Hostile creature views you unfavorably. You have Disadvantage on an ability check to influence a Hostile creature."

If you were to strictly apply this, you could not make an AOO on any creature charmed by you or any creature who is neutral in a fight. Further since the definition is representative of a "viewpoint"about an individual creature you could get in a wierd area - I don't view those enemy mercenaries 'unfavorably', they are just doing their job fighting us .... so they don't get an attack of opportunity on me.

2. In terms of verisimilitude there is no reason enemies should suffer AOOs but not allies. In terms of the fiction behind the mechanics someone who moves away from you without precautions (disengage) opens themselves up to being attacked. There is no logical reason this would not apply to allies if you wanted to attack the creature moving in such a fashion.
