As a result of that list, I've gotten into the "Dying Earth" fantasy subgenre, Vance's Dying Earth, CA Smith's Zothique, Lin Carters World's End & even some of Gene Wolfe's Urth. As well as the "Sword & Planet" genre.And some of those stories feature robot-like characters, in Urth there are armored spacesuits that evolved sentience over the aeons, robots surviving from ancient supersciene would not be out of place on Barsoom or in the time of World's End, which features a character that is a mechanical bronze bird with a sentient crytalline entity as it's brain.My D&D campaign takes place on Earth ......a Millions Years in the Future!! Sometimes ruins are buried plasticrete skyskrapers, sometimes a gate takes one to terraformed Mars or Venus, and maybe that metal wizard's tower is an abandoned rocketship. (thanks Gene Wolfe!)So, if the Warforged are a core race, it's completely in line with some of the classic fantasy traditions I try to emulate, work for me more than Gnomes, and I'd just have to call them "Androids" or something.
