Flexor the Mighty!

18/100 Strength!
I just noticed that the rule book I have is from the 6th edition which I bought in a boxed set a couple years back. Now there is a 7th edition released last year I discovered. How different are they and does it warrant buying? How compatible are materials from the 2nd and older editions with the new rules. I know there are some differences in characteristics and point vales, but could I use monsters from my 2nd edition bestiary with the new stuff without that much trouble?

You shouldn't have too much trouble. All the stats are still there, it;s just that some of the olde 2nd ed stats have been removed. Your point costs are going to be quite a bit off, and of course, some of the old races have been completely removed from canon, or at least heavily modified. The Slann are now the lizardmen, the amazons and pygmys are gone, chaos dwarves haven't been seen for several versions, and the fimir are nothing but a memory.
Aside from all that though, the game is still pretty similar.

IMO the game changed a bunch, but alot of it is stuff you'd only notice if you were a regular player. Almost all the 6th ed books are still good, and you can use even the ones that have been overruled with minimal problems.

I wouldn't use anything from any of the earlier editions, though. It's like comparing 3.5 to 2nd-- lots of the terminology is similar, but it's not going to work without substantial revisions.
