Dark Pact Origin The truth of Vhaeraun’s meeting with Eilistraee is a dark secret that she will not even share with her most trusted allies. For it was that Vhaeraun, vulnerable after having fought Selvetarm and falling through the Demonweb Pits upon Lolth’s return, was struck down by his dear sister in his weakened state as he pleaded with her for assistance. Having nowhere else to turn, he had counted on his sister’s compassion and benevolence. Instead, he found her enraged by his presence and she lashed out at him with the full force of her godly might, slaying him as surely as Lolth would have, had he begged her to spare him. It is this that has led to her darkened heart and the cruel demeanour after the Spellplague had settled down and Lolth had regained her power. Some would have it that the story be told that she absorbed his essence and portfolio, and that this corrupted her, but her corruption is far more fundamental than this, as Vhaeraun’s essence lives on. Sequestering his godly essence into a soul shard and hiding it where no-one would dare look, he made his way to his sister’s plane and his godly shell was destroyed. For over a hundred years he has remained hidden, biding his time and slowly but surely seeking out allies to his cause. His cause is singular in its purpose and drive: to destroy the Dark Seldarine and become the sole god of the drow, starting with Eilistraee. Goal The Shard of Vhaeraun seeks allies and is willing to teach those who can keep his secret the powers of poison and death. In return he demands that one use their powers to further his aims by recruiting others to his cause or by becoming powerful in their own right to one day join him in his struggle against the Dark Seldarine. Interactions The Shard of Vhaeraun is deceptive and manipulative as he sees it as a teaching method that one must be able to see through such illusions and lies to gain a true understanding of his wisdom. Every lesson is a test and every test is a lesson. Communication The Shard of Vhaeraun speaks in whispers through the shadows to those he deems worthy of his knowledge. He never appears as anything else but a chill breeze that raises ones hackles. His spirit travels through shadows, poisoning the souls of his enemies and tainting them with the mark of death. Pact Boon The Shard of Vhaeraun teaches his pets and servants how to drain the life essence of a victim just at the point of death. This energy takes the form of the tainted screams of the dying that whirl out of the victim as if drawn by a powerful force. These wisps of dark energy swirl about the warlock briefly, being absorbed by the warlock until the screams of the tortured soul fades to nothing.
