Warlord - I don't get it

Mercurius

Legend
It seems like a fighter/cleric multiclass, perhaps a cleric of a god of war. Or it could be a 3ed prestige class. But the point is, the Warlord seems too specialized to be a core class (perhaps like the Warlock, but let me get back to you on that). I'm wondering if it more the designers desire to include "something new"...

The warlord is a great class that I would benefit any group they're in significantly. So I don't see it as being too specialised. With the game revolving around tactical combat, such a class can make a big impact on the success or failure of a group.

Personally, if I wasn't in love with the fighter class, I'd be statting up my warlord right now :)

It is the class for the tactician/group motivator with military trappings instead of divine or arcane. As a fan of the 3e Marshal I have to say that it is a concept I am completely behind.

The Warlord is also the class for the Bard player who likes to play "support". However, the Warlord does support well by contributing a LOT. He compliments other people's abilities.

You know that pushy guy in the gaming group who knows all the rules and all of the best combos? He's always itching (at best — shouting at worst) to tell the other players what to do on their turns, and groaning if they make a tactically "poor" decision?

This is the class for that guy.

Actually, I'd say that is the class, NOT for him. Since he isn't a good, group player and can cause the potential and fun of that class to disappear.

The best person for the Warlord is the person who listens to everyone else, is willing to help them in what they are trying to accomplish and works with not against the other players.

I have a player in my group who is really keen on Warhammer-style minis games. He's very good at tactics. His favorite move was moving the fighter PC a free shift so they would flank an opponent almost every round, and he would try to use Viper Strike on the enemy. (Poor sap was drawing OAs no matter what they did.)

He played a warlord in the first session of KotS, but was killed by Guard Drakes. (Ow. Too much damage.)

I was surprised to find warlords aren't proficient in heavier armor (or so I believe from the PRC). They tend to have high Int, but still...

It is the tactic player's dream come true

I have a player that is in LOVE with the warlord

Yeah, pretty much.

The master tactician in our group has found his dream class. He gets to move all the other PCs around like chess pieces. He is ecstatic.

Its sorta interesting since the guy who is looking forward to the Warlord in my group, is the least tactical oriented. But because of that he has become the most open to suggestions and ideas and group think.

As such the idea of his character assisting and helping the other player characters is really, really nice and fits both with his characters and play style.
