It's a part of who he has been. Which isn't the same thing at all. He keeps the arcane knowledge (that's just skills). A feat is all he needs for the rituals. But he doesn't cast like a first level wizard at all. It is very easy to underestimate quite how magical a Wizard 1 is. A wizard 1 can reliably (putting them well outside the normal S&S range) cast at least one spell per day (again. And remember that Gandalf casts half a dozen spells or so in the whole of Lord of the Rings - in terms of volume of spells, a level 1 D&D wizard would have done that on the way to Rivendell or Moria). And they can do it in about the time it takes a fighter to kill an orc. Plus in the pre-cantrip editions they are almost all capable of learning to flatten an entire combat magically if they learn the Sleep spell. A genuine Vancian archmage could learn only about a dozen spells - and relearning them was a pain. The sheer volume of magic carried even by a low level oD&D wizard is extraordinary by most standards (and a level 2 5e Warlock who can cast Silent Image, Minor Image, and Disguise Self all at will is more powerful than many of Spider-Man's villains, and even some of Iron Man's). The D&D wizard was designed to have enough power to be the equivalent of battlefield artillery. It's funny how I single out the origin story in which the Grey Mouser behaves almost entirely differently from the way he does in the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser stories and you then choose it to quote from. Next we're going to work out Spider-Man's capabilities based on the time he punched out Fire Lord. Outside that story it's mostly divination magic and The Great Spell - which is arguably a magic item and is a plot-specific one shot. If it's an in-the-moment choice (as opposed to the choice for someone who can drive a tank not to have one with them on the streets of a city) then it says very interesting things about The Grey Mouser. It says either that he is terrified of using magic, he almost never got into a situation scary enough for him to break the magic out, or that his magic is less effective than his sword except under very rare circumstances. If it's a long term decision (and in the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser universe being a powerful wizard is about the equivalent of being a top notch fighter pilot; you need a plane and a pit crew of engineers or equivalent groundings) thenm for all practical purposes he isn't a wizard in the books. And that's definitely doable as a feat. But this is part of the point. Other than Elric (who purposely inverts the tropes) The Grey Mouser is about as magical as characters get without being an active archmage (some of Jack Vance's work).
