D&D 5E Warlords: Martial Healing is where it is meant to be

I always liked the idea of the warlock...unfortunately I never liked the execution. My fave warlock so far has been the one in the 5e playtest one, so here's hoping they get it right this time.

In my B/X campaign, I made the warlock an alternative class for the cleric, since they're very similar. The cleric worships greater powers; the warlock makes deals with them.

In both cases, I changed the spellcasting mechanic to a reaction check. You had to convince the greater power to make whatever spell you wanted to happen, and you might have to power it with your own, or anothers, energy (hit points).

The 3e warlock was good, as it was so different form mages at the time... I'd love to see this as feat tree or something that is magical power without learning or innate ability.

With all this cramming of classes into the fighter and mage super-classes I wonder whether they'll slaughter some sacred cows and make the paladin and ranger subclasses of the fighter too.

That particular cow isn't too sacred. It wasn't until 3rd edition that they weren't fighter subclasses.

EDIT: During the Unearthed Arcana period of 1st edition, the Paladin was a subclass of the cavalier.

I'm not fond of martial healing, but, man, at this point I just don't care. Just make a good system and we'll talk.

Agreed. And if I personally do not like martial healing, I will always have the option to houserule it out of my game. But I think it is important to have it for the players and DMs that likes martial healing.

Do many people really play with imaginary players? I feel for them if true. Or are we meaning the players imaginary characters.

I feel like there's a good NPC joke to made out of this.

I'm glad to see the Warlord concept translate over, despite never being a fan of the general implementation of 4e (personally-speaking), since martial beefing has always been one of my favorite niches to play. One of my favorite 3e characters still remains a fairly-optimized War Chanter I played into epic.
